Full job description

The Role

The Directorate Navy Engineering Maritime Warfare (DNE MW) is seeking technologist specialist in the field of Cyber and software to undertake work in the area of Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Electronic Warfare (C5ISREW) and Industrial Control Systems (ICS) technologies to support acquisition and sustainment of surface ships and submarines for the Royal Australian Navy. This is a Navy’s specialist technologist position, which will provide independent assurance and advice to Navy/Fleet for the following activities:

  • Develops and maintains the technical skill sets for software, cyber security, cyber safety, cyber worthiness of C5ISREW and ICS systems to advice Major Systems FIC Lead and Materiel Governance Authority (MGA).
  • Perform technical cyber worthiness assurance assessment for all C5ISREW and ICS projects to all Capability Manager Representatives (CMR).
  • Perform technical assessment of software safety assurance against approved standards.
  • Provide technical advice to all Navy Major and Minor Projects.
  • Provide technical support to Fleet Cyber Unit (FCU) for incident response and analysis activities.
  • Maintain and develop the Navy Cyber worthiness Laboratory to effectively support Fleet Cyber Unit (FCU) and other Navy agencies.
  • Provide technical specialist support for cyber vulnerability assessment, incident response, cyber engineering, threat research, security and safety and management of the Maritime Cyber Range.

Provision of SME and Warranted advice for software safety, software assurance, cyber systems safety, cyber security and Industrial Control Systems to range of stakeholders within Defence and industry.

 

About our Team

This position is within the Cyber Systems Technology Cell, a small dynamic team within Directorate Navy Engineering Maritime Warfare (DNE MW). DNE is the Director General Engineering Navy (DGENG-N)’s primary engineering Directorate, which provides and retain specialist technical and engineering Subject Matter Experts (SME) and Suitably Qualified Experienced Personal (SQEP) to support Navy engineering tasks.

 

DNE is responsible for the coordinated Navy Engineering Branch (NEB) inputs to programs and projects, ensuring the NEB is represented on all Naval and Defence matters requiring Navy Engineering expertise throughout all phases of the Defence Capability Life Cycle (CLC).

 

DNE is customer focused and continuously delivers products and services to Navy stakeholders. DNE consists of six directorates aligned to Navy technology and whole of ship support needs.

 

Join a team, which works collaboratively with Engineers and Technical Specialist from different disciplines within Australian Public Service, Australian Defence Force and broader Industry to understand, shape and improve warfighting capabilities across Navy.

 

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have an experience and knowledge in cyber safety and security and software safety, willingness to learn new skills outside of their comfort zone and is motivated to continually develop their skill sets. Candidates must:

  • Being able to lead a small team, allocate work, resources and tasks, set priorities, develop strategies and evaluate business outcomes in a demanding environment.
  • Managing the certification or validation of systems to support accreditation through collecting and analysing cyber security and software safety related information.
  • Building and sustaining effective relationships with stakeholders and customers relating to the suitability and implementation of information and cyber security systems, software safety, policies, standards and guidelines.
  • The ability to assess and analyse information and cyber security practices and procedures to ensure compliance with security principles, policies, standards, and guidelines.
  • Skilfully interpret business objectives adjust team priorities to progress work to meet business objectives.
  • Being accurate with completion of work within challenging timeframes.
  • Have strong analytical skills in control and automation, cyber security and safety with the ability to apply these skills to naval ships.
  • Be willing to contribute to a culture of cooperation and sharing of knowledge, with a willingness to take on leadership and mentoring roles.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and within a team.
  • Occasionally work interstate and live on-board Navy ships at sea remote from land for a few days.
