Full job description

Char Barossa is a family-owned restaurant in the heart of the Barossa Valley wine region, South Australia. Operating since September 2019, we quickly established a place in the Barossa culinary scene for great quality food and amazing steaks attracting both regular local trade and tourists alike.  

Char Barossa’s food philosophy is simple food, done well. Our menu features flavours from the chargrill and we are passionate about utilizing local South Australian produce.  

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Sous Chef to join our Char family and help lead our dedicated kitchen team. Char Barossa is open for lunch & dinner service 5 days a week: Wednesday-Sunday.  

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Head Chef in the planning, design and costing of menus
  • Liaising with suppliers and managing kitchen budgets
  • Supervising kitchen staff
  • Work closely with the restaurant manager, kitchen team and customer service to ensure the business runs smoothly
  • Ensure all dishes are presented to the set standard
  • Prepare food according to individual customers’ dietary requirements, ensuring customer requests are followed correctly
  • Monitor food stock and place orders
  • Supervise and train cooks & junior staff of a lower level and to ensure proper activities and to monitor the quality and quantity of food prepared
  • Inspect supplies, equipment and work areas for cleanliness and functionality
  • Ensure compliance with all the Hygiene, Occupational, Health & Safety regulations within the kitchen area  

The successful candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a Certificate IV in commercial cookery and at least 2 years of relevant experience in a senior kitchen position
  • Display confident cooking styles with a strong emphasis on quality and presentation
  • Demonstrate a passion for food and local produce
  • Be reliable, energetic, and able to work calmly in busy situation
  • Great communication skills and be an excellent team player
  • Australian working rights or relevant VISA working rights. The right candidate may be considered for an employer sponsorship
